Silent No More

Silent No More- long

It all started with the silent no more campaign.

Where citizens took it upon themselves to speak out on behalf of the patient. It is still a very active part of what we do and anyone can take part. All you have to do is arm yourself with the Patient rights charter and speak out.  Patients now have rights in Kenya!

See below for some History from our founder Alice Mwongera in an interview recorded in February 2011 with host Jeff Koinange.
As you look back we are going forward. Have a look around our website to see what we are up to and perhaps how you could get involved.

There is a moment in most good stories where goodness triumphs over evil. Today was one of those days. Today a ceremony was held for Queen Elizabeth II and the whole world tuned in.

The Queen lived her life for good and used her position wisely, and on earth we rarely see a greater example.

Today was as much about the queen as it was about us, the people of this land, the people of the world even, such was her reach. As people queued for hours, some even twice. There was something to behold, something to experience, there was some greatness about her or what she stood for that drew us.

Today was a moment to observe and contemplate that good and take it to heart. It was a chance to examine our ourselves in reflection and to seek and portray that goodness and love for ourselves; to somehow hang onto it and take a piece home with us.
In this moment in an island of calm and peace whilst mourning the passing of a great Queen and all that she stood for, we could collectively ponder death, not just hers but also ones dear to us, even perhaps our own. It was a nice touch when they stepped around the tomb of the unknown soldier as death comes to all even Kings and Queens can't avoid it.

There was something about our Queen that people saw and respected and admired, but perhaps did not truly understand. Something that drew them across the world to London or to turn on the TV or watch live streamed as the most watched broadcast in history.

Todays proceedings and message, if people were listening, has been one giant banner for good. To some they may just have seen a frail old lady a monarchy they perhaps don't agree with, but today Presidents, Prime ministers and famous people, republicans and even Kings and Queens (also Arab, Muslim Kings) caught buses to come pay their respects. Add to this the 2 Billion people who watched online, and the millions who lined the streets.

Why is this and how could this be?
Was it really because it was a show, the greatest show on earth even?

No, truly they will most likely put on the same show for King Charles III and
I have my doubts that it will have the same draw?
I tell you!
It was because of her and who she was and what she believed and how she lived her life, her character and her promises fulfilled which are so rare in this world.
She was a beacon of light and hope, not because of her position, not even because she was necessarily a better person than anyone else, we all have our flaws and so did she.

She was a beacon of light because of her steadfast love and faith in God. It was this faith that shaped her to be like she was. As Andrew Welby stated
"Her allegiance to God was given before any person gave allegiance to her. Her service to so many people in this nation, the Commonwealth and the world had its foundation in her following Christ – God himself "

He was her inner light. She was never shy to say it and it was her lifelong message, at every occasion she got to speak and portray through her actions and character whenever possible.
The light that people saw and were drawn to even without understanding it, was the true light of Jesus, that she shone brightly from her pedestal.

She never failed in her mission, even today at her funeral.
There was lots to see but only one message.

People could have seen things differently,
Little girls may have said,
"wow, look at those flowers," or
"look there's Harry"
and perhaps boys would have piped in "check out those soldiers" and then watched out for the helicopters overhead and the snipers on the roof and thought, huhh "I hope they don't drop that coffin."

Lots to see and lots to get distracted by, but there was really only one message today and it was the fulfilment of her life's mission.
Her wishes were fulfilled to perfection, and no it wasn't just the flowers or the route, or who did what as people are now talking about.

It was the message of her life which was whispered beyond the grave.
It was at the forefront, but you had to have ears to hear it and eyes to see. The world has become good at ignoring it.

If you could ignore the pomp and ceremony you may have heard it. More than 2 billion people may have heard it. I hope some were listening as it was oh so perfectly crafted.

Whilst we watched an ornate ceremony of a Queen being given back to God her father, we were aptly told of another ceremony of which this earthly one, was just a mere shadow. A ceremony like no other, where instead of palace guards, soldiers and sailors; there are countless Angels of every rank.

It is not a funeral this time, but a celebration of epic proportions.
If it is a funeral, it is the funeral for death itself.
At the very end, the coming of Jesus, the King of Kings and the celebration of the fulfilment of his mission, when he hands over the kingdom to God.

The Queen wanted everyone to be part of that kingdom. Not the united kingdom but the kingdom of God.

In the words of The Archbishop of Canterbury at todays funeral.
"We will all face the merciful judgment of God: we can all share the Queen’s hope which in life and death inspired her servant leadership.
Service in life, hope in death. All who follow the Queen’s example, and inspiration of trust and faith in God, can with her say ‘we will meet again’.”

Today I wonder if the UK Prime Minister who read part of this message, truly understood or heard what it meant. "The natural man (or woman) does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."

I wonder if even now you hear or understand.
If you do, then its God who is revealing it to you and its the miracle of life. Eternal life for all those who believe. We are all on different journeys with unique positions in life, its not just Kings and Queens, “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” and I think the Queen was a very humble lady given her position.

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?"

Today the message was sent around the world, Let "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" The call went out to billions of people. Its not too late to find out the truth and your light can shine, just like the Queens.
It should be of no coincidence that the most read book in the world is the bible and today the most watched event, was centred on the bible.

God is calling You. Its real, pay attention.
If you heard that call please respond, its the best thing you could ever do.

This is juicy News and a win for the patients ... It is the high time that PATIENTS were treated with honour and respect and the dignity that they deserve.
After all, they are the employers of the healthcare workers. Without the patients, the whole medical field would shit down.
Lets show them some respect.

Some of our Projects

Tigoni hand wash campaign with Griffin's hospital team and Planetree

The theme for the hand wash campaign was
“JE UMENAWA MIKONO?
Meaning ” Have you washed your hands?

This was mooted to get care providers to wash or sanitise their hands after attending to one patient before moving to another.

Patient Centred Care training Kiambu County
This was a 4-day training  ( September 2016 ) that brought together doctors, nurses, clinical officers and the administrative staff of different facilities within Kiambu county. The purpose of the training was to equip the caregivers with tools necessary to implement Patient-centred care in their institutions.
The trainers included Dr Haq Nawaz of Griffin Hospital Connecticut USA, Tracy Walsh of Planetree and Alice Mwongera of Morris Moses Foundation.

The training was hosted at KMTC Kiambu by Rosalind Murugami , Assistant director of nursing for Kiambu county under the leadership of  Dr. Toro,  Director of Health Kiambu county.

Hospital Partnerships

One of the activities which began in 2014 was to broker partnerships between public hospitals in Kenya and hospitals abroad. This creates a platform where our hospitals can receive technical support and also have the opportunity to exchange ideas in different areas of health care.

After many months of dialogue, Morris Moses Foundation, courtesy of Planetree and WHO, has been able to secure a partnership between Tigoni District Hospital and Griffins Hospital in Connecticut, USA. In the month of March, a team from Griffins Hospital and a representative from Planetree will be visiting Tigoni in order to understand the different challenges they face and the scope of what is needed to bridge the gaps.

Currently, Morris Moses is in talks with other hospitals and we hope to be able to sign more partnerships.

Boresha Afya Star Awards

In 2014 we launched the very first Boresha Afya Star Awards, BASA.

Our focus was to recognise health care workers who stood out despite the different challenges they face. We gave the patients the opportunity to give us feedback and help us recognise anyone they felt went beyond the call of duty to make their experience in a hospital a better one.

Based on the information we got, we managed to acknowledge the efforts of a number of individuals in different counties.
Some of the counties represented include Nairobi, Narok, Marsabit and Kiambu.

Dr. Lusweti of Thika level 5, who was one of the most voted stars, was part of the team that accompanied Alice to the annual Planetree conference in Chicago where Alice was a speaker on rewarding excellence.

The team also had an opportunity to interact with medics from different parts of the world where Patient Centred care is being practised as well as visit a few hospitals that have been able to perfect Patient centred care.

We hope to be able to have even more medics attending the next conference.
